Open Houses Brighton

Well the time has come for the May Open House Exhibition here in Brighton and aside from a lovely little ad at the back of the official brochure (page 94), I also have a few pieces in a couple of houses. One is opposite St Peter’s Church on the Level at York Place Studios (page 17 of the brochure) and the other is in Seven Dials at York Mansions West on York Avenue (page 79 of the brochure). Please do head along and visit and pick up a card if you’re interested. Showing in these locations are a number of different artists ranging from jewellery to textiles to installation so they’re well worth checking out.

Bat for Lashes & ‘Daniel’

I was recently very priviledged to work with the wonderful Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes on the cover for her latest CD single, ‘Daniel’. The single is the first to be released from Bat for Lashes eagerly awaited second album ‘Two Suns’ which is out, along with the single, from the 6th of April 2009. ‘Daniel’ is available for download on iTunes now.  The concept was all Natasha’s and the artwork was another interesting first for me. I projected the image of Daniel from the 80’s classic ‘The Karate Kid’ onto Natasha’s back before painting the portrait directly onto her skin. I used Acrylic paints for this as Oils are abit too toxic for body artwork. For the final image we all headed down to Brighton beach at sunset to capture the finished product. The very talented photographer, Laura Guy, captured the image that you will see on the single cover.

Bonnie & Ty

I recently completed a special painting of two lovely dogs called Ty and Bonnie. They were commissioned by some very nice people at South East Health for a 60th birthday present. Linda, who’s birthday it was, loves her dogs so much that everyone agreed it would be the perfect gift for her. I entered into the commission with some trepidation having never painted dogs before! But with dogs as characterful as this it was a pleasurable challenge.Thai & Bonnie

BP Portrait Awards

I have just entered my portrait of ‘Joe the Goat’ into the annual BP Portrait Award hosted by the National Portrait Gallery. I’ll be taking Joe (in canvas form) up to be judged in March so fingers crossed maybe the judges will like him enough to chose him for the final exhibition. I’ll keep you posted though I’m sure you will hear me shouting from the rooftops should I get accepted. Competition for this one is fierce!

Review in the Argus

Christmas Open Houses. Various Locations, Dec 6-7 and Dec 13-14.

Friday 5th December 2008

By Nione Meakin

Hundreds of tiny origami paper birds are suspended from a ceiling as part of an installation by Ingrid Plum in the Bristol Estate Artist Studio, In Donald Hall Road.

In the Badgers Hill Workshop, in South Heighton, near Newhaven, kinetic sculptures and wire automata await visitors to bring them to life,

while in St George’s Terrace, Brighton, Mel Evans’ striking, modern oil portraits look down from the walls (whether the eyes follow you around the room remains to be seen).

Now in its sixth year – hence the “six geese a-laying” illustration of the brochure – the Christmas Open Houses event offers a showcase of local art and craft. More than 77 houses open their doors to the public, to display a dizzying variety of prints, ceramics, furnishings, photography, accessories, textiles, jewellery and paintings.

A popular complement to the May Artists’ Open Houses event that takes place as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe, organiser Judy Stevens says: “It’s a great place to go Christmas shopping away from the crowds, where you can drink mulled wine and enjoy open fires as you shop.

“The items on sale are more individual than anything you’d get on the High Street, and most of it’s very affordable too.”

Knowing where to begin can be tricky, but the brochure (and website) offers a map listing all the houses opening in an area. Because many are clustered close together, visitors can easily cover a good proportion in one trip. Judy, whose own house, 6 Clifton Street, will be welcoming visitors, is particularly looking forward to seeing what is on display at The Handmade House, off Lewes Road (paintings, ceramics, jewellery), the Bungaroosh Gallery, in Marine Square, Brighton (illuminated toy houses, vintage fabric clothing) and the Bristol Estate (new art, handmade books, decorations). The latter has only recently opened and will be a key feature in next May’s Open Houses event.

Unlike other, similar events, Christmas Open Houses has an open policy that means any artists or makers with an interest in taking part are included, making for a wide and varied programme.
